Municipal Court

New Jersey has 531 municipal courts throughout the State. They process more than six million cases every year. Municipal courts are responsible for not only handling traffic violations, but also disorderly persons and petty disorderly persons violations like theft, shop lifting, harassment, assault, to mention a few. Because of the shear volume and nature of the matters that are handled, municipal courts are the one court with which most people will come in contact.

The technological advances afforded to police are staggering. Virtually every police car is equipped with a mobile data terminal which provides central monitoring, voice recognition software, satellite links, electronic tickets, barcode readers to scan drivers licenses, digital imaging to verify the identity of the driver. Police can now determine if a driver received a warning, was issued motor vehicle tickets, whether there were any domestic violence issues and other contacts with law enforcement. Municipal court therefore has become an ever increasingly important element of public life.

The consequences of those things that occur in municipal court likewise have great impact. Depending upon a situation and a charge, Defendants can spend as much as six months in County jail, be placed on probation, have their driving privileges suspended, and pay fines and costs which could reach thousands of dollars.

Motor vehicle violations may affect your car insurance rates and unpaid tickets, fines, or penalties may affect your credit. While it may only be a speeding ticket, it may have far reaching, and long enduring consequences.
